QRC launches new Code of Practice for Local Content

21 March 2013

Excerpt from the QRC Media Release, "Resources sector unites for local businesses",  21 March 2013:

Queensland minerals and energy sector companies are uniting under a voluntary code of practice to strengthen linkages with local suppliers.

Welcoming the code’s tabling in Parliament today by Deputy Premier Jeff Seeney, Queensland Resources Council Chief Executive Michael Roche said it was in the state and nation’s long-term interest to support flexible and outcomes-based measures to ‘join the dots’ between the resources sector and local suppliers.

‘The minerals and energy sector is recognised as underpinning the Queensland economy by providing more than 70,000 direct jobs, and through $28 billion in local purchases, more than 400,000 indirect jobs,’ Mr Roche said.

‘However, we’re not resting on our laurels. This code is the right vehicle to pursue the twin goals of facilitating a high level of Queensland content in Queensland resource projects, while maintaining and enhancing the sector’s competitiveness in increasingly tough global markets.

The Queensland steel construction and fabrication industry have formally united through an Alliance to further efforts to combat ongoing decline of the sector.

The Queensland Steel Construction and Fabrication Industry Alliance aims to address the decline of the steel local content share in Queensland and develop a climate of secure, long-term industry investment in the Queensland steel industry.

Alliance members have been working together since 2011 to tackle issues such as local content legislation, unemployment and apprenticeships, compliance and safety, and imported steelwork.  It is hoped that by formalising, the group will be better placed to leverage existing relationships generate increased momentum within the Queensland community.
