Queensland industry in crisis

Ongoing trends within the Queensland resource, mining and infrastructure marketplace to engage steel fabrication and manufacturing services off shore, have negatively impacted the Queensland steel construction and fabrication industry.

The negative impacts are felt throughout the supply chain, from engineers to drafting services, metal fabrication to steel construction workers, and transport companies.  This lack of local content share is impacting our industry today has  grave implications on the future of a skilled workforce within the Queensland steel construction and fabrication industry. 

The Australian steel sector is currently operating at historically low levels as imported fabricated steel continues to enter the local market.
 

​The steel sector is currently operating at historically low levels of about 50% capacity.  If nothing is done to fill our capacity, businesses will continue to close.   In many cases this closure of capacity will be in regions with already high effective unemployment rates.

27% reduction in the number of fabrication businesses operating in Queensland in just three years, between 2008 and 2011.

At June 2008,  203 metal fabrication businesses, each employing 1-19 staff, were registered in Queensland. ​​​
This number has declined to just 148 by June 2011.

33% decline in the number of people employed in the metal fabrication industry, nation wide, in the decade from 2001 to 2011.
 

82,500 Australian's were employed in the metal fabrication industry in September 2001.​

​By September 2011, the national figure had declined by over 30% to just 54,900.
